The Latino Initiative: Digital Media Project

Repeatedly, Latino teens have told us that there is a lack of teen pregnancy prevention messages aimed specifically at them and that they rarely saw themselves portrayed accurately or their perspectives on teen pregnancy prevention adequately addressed in the general media.

In an effort to address the absence of Latino youths in the media and thwart an increasing concern repeatedly expressed by Latino teens—that they often feel overlooked by popular media—the Latino Initiative spearheaded a pregnancy prevention digital media project targeting Latino teens through the use and creation of user-generated content.  Through this project, we hope to address the shortage of pregnancy prevention messages aimed at Latino teens by providing Latino youth the opportunity to create and star in the videos themselves.

The goal of this project is to obtain as much Latino-youth generated video content as possible in order to produce several high-quality teen pregnancy prevention Personal Public Service Announcements (PPSAs) that reflect the communities they were created in.  Currently working on developing content are several Latino youth-serving organizations including, Fresno Youth for Christ, the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Fresno Barrios Unidos, The Chicano Youth Center, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, The Latino Commission, Latinitas, the California Health Collaborative, and the Boys and Girls Club of Tulare.
