Is one of the nation's most impressive public health successes of the past two decades grinding to a halt? After 14 years straight years of decline, the teen birth rate in the United States increased by five percent between 2005 and 2007.
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and a number of thoughtful and accomplished individuals gathered at a forum exploring the increase in the teen birth rate and what might be done to reverse the recent rise.
The event highlighted the critical need for the nation to invest more fully in proven strategies to prevent teen pregnancy, to seek out new and innovative solutions, and to keep this critical issue before the press, parents, the entertainment media, and others.
Speakers included talk show host Maury Povich, actress Kristen Alderson of ABC's One Life to Live, Michigan Surgeon General Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom, National Campaign Board President Isabel Sawhill, a number of state teen pregnancy experts, as well as leaders in digital and entertainment media.
