Statement from Sarah Brown, CEO, National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy
7/27/2009
"The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy applauds the House of Representatives for passing an important new initiative designed to prevent teen pregnancy. With a total of $128 million included in the Labor, HHS, and Education Appropriations bill for evidence-based programs, this initiative is the first and only large-scale federal investment dedicated to preventing teen pregnancy through proven, effective efforts. This initiative is particularly timely given that the teen birth rate in the United States is on the increase after 14 straight years of decline.
We commend President Obama, Rep. David Obey, Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, and other members of the House for emphasizing good science, encouraging more research and innovation, and investing in this generation and the next.
Along with many who work directly with young people all across the United States, we now encourage the Senate to follow the House’s lead to help ensure that funding for evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention is included in its Appropriations bill, and that this important legislation is passed quickly."
About The National Campaign. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy seeks to improve the lives and future prospects of children and families. Our specific strategy is to prevent teen pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy among single, young adults. We support a combination of responsible values and behavior by both men and women and responsible policies in both the public and private sectors.
If we are successful, child and family well-being will improve. There will be less poverty, more opportunities for young men and women to complete their education or achieve other life goals, fewer abortions, and a stronger nation.
