ALABAMA

  • Statewide: The Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is promoting National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in a number of ways:
    • Proclamation signing on May 8 by Alabama Governor Bob Riley.
    • Distribution of National Day Wristbands and cards encouraging youth to take the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Quiz – approximately 3,100 youth are expected to receive the bands during April and May 2009.
    • Promotion of National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy through the Campaign’s eNews distributed to contacts and partners throughout Alabama. 
    • Media interview on WSFA (local NBC affiliate) on Monday, Apr 27.
  • Mobile County, ALMobile United is hosting an Adolescent Risky Behavior Prevention Forum on April 30 that will provide participants with a realistic snapshot of adolescent risky behavior in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.  To meet the needs of healthy families and our local workforce, Mobile and Baldwin Counties need healthy adolescents. Mobile United, Mobile County Public Health Department, The University of South Alabama, Mobile County Department of Human Resources, The Drug Education Council and Alabama Rural Action Commission invite will:
    • Present information about adolescent risky behavior in Mobile/Baldwin Counties
    • Acknowledge the issues before us
    • Begin to develop a Community Position about adolescent risky behavior prevention
  • Shocco Springs, Talladega, AL:  During the FOCUS Program’s Sixth Annual Rally for Awareness, high school students from throughout Alabama will participate in a two-day rally addressing adolescent risk factors.  One session “Let’s Get Real” will be presented by students from Lineville High School.  The session is described as:  “Needed now: clarity and consistency! We need to double the FOCUS on sexual risk behaviors and lower the incidence of HIV, STIs, and Teen Pregnancy in the state of Alabama. Hear the REAL truth and learn how to NOT become a statistic.” 

    The FOCUS Program promotes school and community partnerships for the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other adolescent risk behaviors. The program is based on a student led approach and seeks to promote youth involvement in the planning of prevention activities. The class includes: focus group training, peer helping, peer mediation, peer tutoring, violence prevention, and positive decision making skills. Other features of the program include planning monthly health observances, a yearly school health fair, and service learning. Teacher training is provided through various Regional Education In-service Centers.

ARIZONA

  • Prescott, AZ: North Star Youth Partnership is working on a number of events to recognize the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy as well as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month:
    • They are collaborating with Pima Prevention Partnership and Arizona Youth Partnership in the planning and implementing of a statewide Youth Leadership Summit designed to create a plan that promotes teen pregnancy/STD prevention which will be implemented in their respective communities during Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. A total of 60 Youth Council members, 20 from each site location, will be trained in Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL).  The PAL Peer Assistance and Leadership is an award-winning peer helping program providing effective training in helping skills.  PAL combats problems such as violence in schools, drug abuse, teen pregnancy, gang participation, and school dropouts by providing a critical line of defense both at school and in the home. PAL trains selected teens as peer helpers.  Training topics include negotiation, leadership, meeting and group facilitation, strategic planning, collaboration, team work, group decision-making, and conflict resolution. Core leaders selected from within the three agencies will also conduct action plan reviews on a monthly basis (in-person or electronically) to review status of the plan, identify opportunities, and resolve barriers prior to the Youth Leadership Summit.
    • North Star Youth Partnership also plan to hold their annual kick-off event, Teen Maze, a life-size game board, which will be attended by over 1,000 area teens. At this event, they plan to distribute information and wristbands to encourage the participants to take the National Day Quiz.  On May 6, they will host our annual Teen Pregnancy Prevention Community Breakfast which is attended by governmental officials, school personnel, youth and community leaders.  Attendees are given information to help distribute throughout the community and offer suggestions on how to educate others about teen pregnancy.  During this breakfast, they will also recognize our Teen Leaders and Peer Mentors and showcase their activities and projects as well as announce their 4th  Annual Community Youth Advocate Award.
    • In addition, their Teens Taking Action and Peer Mentors will host lunchtime booths in their respective high schools to help educate their peers about teen pregnancy, encourage them to take the quiz and distribute National Campaign materials.  On May 16, they will also host their 8th annual Girls & Sports Day which is designed to combat the negative physical and psychological health hazards affecting girls through sport and physical activity educational interventions that support girls’ health and wellness.

ARKANSAS

  • Pine Bluff, AR: SE Arkansas’ oldest and largest teen pregnancy prevention program, ACCESS, Inc., will celebrate Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month with a series of workshops based on the CEC's "Programs That Work".  They are planning a Healthy Teen Awareness Fest on May 15th at their local convention center.  Local youth-based organizations, churches, schools, city and county government officials, and a few local celebrities have been invited to take part in the activity.  The are also planning a youth challenge, in which local junior and high schools will compete to raise the most money (in pennies) as a fundraising and awareness raising event.
  • Hot Springs, AR: The Smart Teens/Healthy Decisions Coalition is gearing up for National Day with a number of activities.  They plan to offer wristbands and buttons to students who take the online quiz at local middle school and high school campuses.  They are also holding a National Day poster design contest.  In addition, they are planning an event at a local middle school campus where student will present dramatic skits demonstrating effective communication strategies to avoid risky behavior and to stand up to peer pressure. Other schools in the county are being sent invitations to participate and being offered a free National Day kit with fliers, wristbands, and a list of ideas and offer of guest speakers from the Coalition.

CALIFORNIA

  • Fresno, CA: Fresno Barrios Unidos’ Healthy Decisions program will be hosting a poster contest in recognition of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. It will be open to all area youth and winners will be announced on the National Day. Entries will also be displayed at their youth-run health fair, held at Fresno High on May 15th. Participants are encouraged to use any medium in creating a poster that shows why teen pregnancy prevention is important.
  • Hemet/San Jacinto, California: Valley Wide Counseling, a Program of MFI Recovery, is planning their third annual community event in recognition of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. They are hosting the “Know Limits” Teen Health Challenge:  “No Limits” to Achieve, at the Hemet Valley Mall.  The event is set for Saturday, May 2nd from 12-4pm and more than 40 community agencies, schools, government and local business are planning to attend.  Several performances have been scheduled by the local cheer/dance teams, a band, DJ, and VITAL (an intergenerational theatre troupe). They also plan to have activities such as a raffle, rock wall, and an information scavenger hunt.  In addition, local media will be in attendance along with support from local fire and police stations.
  • Los Angeles, CA: The Los Angeles Unified School District is planning a Teen Pregnancy Symposium for April 15, 2009 to train schools on the issue of teen pregnancy in an effort to get them prepared for the National Day.  National Campaign Outreach Associate Jennifer Drake will give the keynote address and conduct a breakout session on teen pregnancy prevention and the National Day at the event.  They will also be supporting schools across the district in their National Day planning National Day activites and encouraging students to take the online quiz.
  • Moreno Valley, CA: The Justice Teen Parenting Center is collaborating with Moreno Valley Family Health Center, Bloomington Family Clinic, and community organizations to present "Get Informed," on May 29, 2009.  They are planning a number of workshops and interactive events in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties including the National Day Quiz on May 6, 2009.
  • National City, CA: In commemoration of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Operation Samahan, the Sweetwater Union High School District, and other community programs to bring an exciting and education night event for the entire family.  They will be offering a parent education class, both in English and Spanish, where parents can learn how to have those difficult discussions with their children about sex, puberty, healthy relationships, and self respect.

    While the parents are being educated, there will be games and activities for youth that community agencies have put together.  These "event stations" center around the same themes as the parents, but are designed for a younger audience. The whole time, they will be offering food and drinks, educational and community resources, and some great raffle prizes.

    In addition, Operation Samahan's Youth 2 Youth Center will commemorate May 6th as the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy by exhibiting a table at Sweetwater Union High School during lunch time.  Their peer educators will provide students with information about the National Day Quiz and the family planning services available to youth at our teen clinic.  They will also be hosting a small event at the Youth 2 Youth Center where they will make our computer labs open to youth to allow them to take the quiz online.  Youth who take the quiz online receive free food and a ticket for a chance to win raffle prizes.  Staff will also be available to answer questions about reproductive health and provide assistance in terms of family planing services.
  • Ocanside, CA: In observance of the National Day, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside is holding a luncheon forum dubbed “Creating Sisterhood That Lasts a Lifetime” on May 9th from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at 401 Country Club Lane, Oceanside.  Confirmed speakers for the event include Jamie Hay from the Pregnancy Resource Center of Oceanside and Kim Brown from the San Diego District Attorney’s Office.   • San Bernardino, CA: Inland Agency is hosting a Teen Health Expo for this year's National Day. This Expo will feature various community organizations to provide our youth and families with resources. There will also be a booth where teens can take the quiz. Proclamations from the Mayor's Office and the Fifth District Supervisor will be read. A survey to evaluate the attitudes and beliefs about teen pregnancy in the community will also be given to community members. They plan to offer free information, raffle prizes, face painting, refreshments and more.
  • San Jose, CA: New Strategies for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention in Santa Clara County East Side Work group -- a collaboration between South Bay Children's Medical Foundation, East Side/Evergreen Rotary Club, Cal-Safe, East Side Union High School District Child Development, YMCA, YWCA of Silicon Valley, Planned Parenthood, and the Teen Parent Working Group of the Family Learning Center at Foothill High School --  is planning a Health Fair around the National Day.  The goal of the health fair is to give youth of San Jose the resources needed to stay mentally, physically and emotionally healthy.  The event is sponsored by David & Lucile Packard Foundation and will be administered by Sociometrics and Social Research Application.
  • Wilmington, CA: The Harbor Area Teen Pregnancy Prevention Collaborative is planning away for this year’s National Day. On May 6th from lunch-time until after school, they are holding a teen pregnancy prevention "Love Fair" at San Pedro High School. This fair will have various interactive booths on issues surrounding teen pregnancy (including a station where they can take the quiz online), live entertainment, and free food. They plan to invite teen for San Pedro High School, as well as other area high schools, to participate.

COLORADO

  • Statewide: The Colorado Association for School-Based Health Care is creating promotional materials, including National Day buttons, to distribute at school-based clinics throughout the state. They hope that this will raise awareness of the National Day and also help inform teens about the clinics that exist within each school and the services they provide. An additional survey about school-based health care will help to assess different services that may be lacking and how many youth knew about the clinic before that day.
  • Denver, CO: To raise awareness about teen pregnancy, and the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, the Denver Teen Pregnancy Prevention Partnership is hosting a city-wide art contest.  The artwork will be displayed at the Museo de las Americas on May 7, and prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers.  More information about the contest is available at www.myspace.com/DTPPP
  • Pueblo, CO: On Wednesday May 6, the Pueblo City-County Health Department in partnership with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, the Colorado Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention, The David and Lucille Packard Foundation, and Colorado State University - Pueblo, is hosting a community forum on teen pregnancy prevention.  The forum will consist of a free lunch event for community leaders and youth and family service providers along with breakout sessions to allow for more in-depth conversations on specific topics related to teen pregnancy prevention.  There will also be an evening dinner event for families to encourage more conversation about teen pregnancy prevention between parents and their children and in the community more broadly.  In addition, this resolution was adopted by the Colorado Board of Health in recognition of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month.
  • Yuma, CO: Rural Communities Resource Center and ESTRELLAS, a young women’s leadership development group for Hispanic high school girls in rural northeastern Colorado, is planning to give a presentation at a local high school on the National Day.  They plan to promote the National Day and the online quiz, as well as share teen pregnancy statistics with all in attendance.

  • New Britain, CT: Greater New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention Inc.'s Pathways/Senderos program is planning a National Day “game show” activity with their Family Life and Sex Education classes using the National Day Quiz.  Teens will be divided into teams to have group discussions about the quiz and will decide on their answers together.  Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.  They plan to publicize the event and encourage others to get involved in the National Day by reaching out to all of their contacts.

FLORIDA

  • Miami, FL: Peaceful Minds Inc. will provide information on teen pregnancy and the National Day as handouts at the Planned Parenthood clinic. In addition, they will encourage students at Miami Palmetto Senior Highin Pinecrest, FL to take the quiz. They are also producing a video for teens dealing with various issues, including teen pregnancy prevention, peer pressure, dating, violence, and abstinence.
  • Orlando, FL:  The Orange County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is hosting a Block Party on Saturday, May 2 in support of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. They plan to offer free HIV and gonorrhea/chlamydia tests, prizes, free food, and much more. Participants include Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando, Orange County Health Department, Healthy Start, Teen Express, Hope and Help, and more local organizations.
  • Yulee, FL: Sutton Place Behavioral Health is currently running a prevention program to target pregnant and parenting teens.  They plan to distribute National Day promotional materials to teens in their community and are sending a National Day press release to local papers to raise awareness of the event. They have also contracted with a local media company to rent advertising billboard space to bring attention to the issue of teen pregnancy.

  • Harlem, GA: Harlem High School’s Youth Council students will promote the National Day at school by wearing shirts, putting up posters about the event, and handing out promotional materials to students. They are also planning a rally in support of the National Day on May 6th.
  • Rome, GA: The Floyd County Teen Center of Northwest Georgia Public Health will facilitate the on-line quiz and discussion at the South Rome Boys & Girls Club, Teen Division on May 7th.

ILLINOIS

  • Chicago, IL: Healthcare Alternative Systems is busy planning a number of events leading up to the National Day. The first event is an open forum for parents to discuss issues surrounding teen pregnancy.  Two students, a teen mother and an abstinent teen, will speak with the parents about the importance of preventing teen pregnancy.  Healthcare Alternative Systems will also participate in an open house event at Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy where they will talk to parents and teen and encourage them to check out the National Day Quiz.  On May 6, they will also give a presentation about teen pregnancy prevention for Rudy Lozano Leadership Academy students.
  • Cook County, IL: The Cook County Department of Public Health's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program plans to partner with a professional educational outreach theatre group know as "HealthWorks", whose mission is to work with communities to address critical health and social issues.  The theatre group will deliver a 1-hour performance to a student body of 2000+ during school.  The goal of the event is to help students think about the future, understand the outcomes of their immediate actions, and learn the value of communication and making positive life choices.  This performance will explores the delicate teen issues of pregnancy, substance abuse and suicide using scripted and real-life dialigue to connect youth. The performance is planned to take place on May 6, 2009 from 9-10am at Morton East High School's 2,500 capacity auditorium. Outreach to promote the event will take place one month prior to the National Day via e-mails to all teachers from the principal encouraging all to attend, flyers posted throughout the school, intercom announcements and word of mouth by our Program Peer Leaders.  At the beginning of the performance, program staff will make all in attendance aware of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and encourage everyone to take the National Day Quiz.  They are also hoping to offer some form of incentive to those who take the test.
  • Glen Ellyn, IL:  Teen Parent Connection is planning to host a breakfast for local legislators, council members, board members, donors, and other community volunteers.  Participants from their program will be invited and they plan to have two of their peer educators (teen parents) share their personal stories.  In addition, they will use their Facebook group and Twitter account to promote the event.  They also plan to post the National Day Quiz and National Day banners on their website and promote the day to all of their programmatic partners.

  • Burlington, Iowa: The Southeast Iowa Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is recognizing Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month and the National Day by working with their city council to issue a proclamation. They are also hosting their 3rd annual Youth Band Jam at the Burlington Memorial Auditorium, sponsored by GRADE A PLUS, KQ92, Hot 97.3, Burlington Parks and Recreation Department, and The Burlington Hawk Eye newspaper.  Attendees will have the chance to listen to some great young musicians and take the National Day Quiz. The are also hosting a silent art auction, Art for Prevention, to help reach adults in the community with messages about teen pregnancy prevention and are planning to run radio PSAs throughout the month encouraging teens to take the National Day Quiz.
  • Des Moines, IA: North High I-JAG High School is planning a campaign for the week to announce facts about teen pregnancy prevention during daily announcements during school. They also plan to post information about the National Day Quiz and host National Day Quiz station throughout the day  in the school library .

  • Presque Isle, ME: ACAP Health Services Family Planning is partnering with local libraries to have National Day posters hung up around computer stations and other teen-friendly areas. They plan to provide teens with information about the National Day and encourage them to take the online quiz by offering incentives to teens who participate.

MARYLAND

  • Anne Arundel County, MD: Healthy Teens and Young Adults of the Anne Arundel County Department of Health is providing a variety of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month activities for some community groups, after school groups and in-school classrooms. Their activies include educational programs about the National Day Quiz; presentations involving the pregnancy profile/empathy belly; programs about abstinence, contraception and STDs; and general distribution of information about these topics and our HTYA Services.
  • Greenbelt, MD: Parents Empowering Families & Communities (PEFAC) will work with the Prince George’s Hospital’s Sexual Assault Center to host a May 2nd seminar, “Teen Dating:  How to Respond to Sexual Pressure,” for youth and their families.  The seminar will take place at 12:00 p.m. at the Greenbelt Library located at 11 Crescent Road in Greenbelt, MD. Attendees will learn the importance of planning how to handle sexually charged situations, how to respond to sexual pressure, and tips for parents/grandparents to help their youth avoid teen pregnancy. Attendees will be encouraged to complete the National Day Quiz and we will promote the National Day Quiz via our e-newsletter.
  • Largo, MD: For the National Day, M.E.L.L. Inc., Butterfly Cares, Inc. and Largo High School will host a teen pregnancy prevention event where we will talk to teens about the importance of pregnancy prevention, as well as STI/AIDS prevention, issues facing teen parents, and services that are available to them.
  • Washington County, MD: The Washington County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is planning a Teen IDEA (Individual Decision Empowerment & Awareness) Challenge for April 19, 2009. At the event, students will compete in a variety of events to earn points for their schools and for a chance at individual prizes. Events will include "Teens Have Choices" Jeopardy, a Choose Your Path Obstacle Course, and entertainment from live bands and theater groups. Information booths from local youth-serving organizations and teen clinics will be on display, and the National Day Quiz will be promoted at a booth, with quizzes from previous years and brochures encouraging teens to take the quiz online this year.

MASSACHUSETTS

  • Lynn, MA: On Tuesday, May 5, girls from Girls Inc. of Lynn’s Mi Vida, Mi Viaje teen pregnancy prevention program will be going out in the community to raise awareness about teen pregnancy and STD’s.  They plan to film interviews with people in their community and get their reaction to local pregnancy/STD statistics for use in their PSA campaign.  They are also planning to have the girls who participate in the program take the National Day Quiz on May 6.
  • Salem, MA: Salem High School is planning activites for the National Day. Participants in the Teen Outreach Program (a program of Health Quarters) are making posters with info about the quiz and statistics about teen pregnancy to be posted throughout the school. There will also be a quiz party in the library immediately following the school day. Announcements about the National Day, the Quiz and the Quiz Party will be made at the beginning of the school day.
  • Springfield, MA: On May 6th, Dunbar Community Center, Inc. celebrated the National Day by opening its doors to teens in the community between the hours of 2-9pm so they can take the National Day Quiz. In addition, they will be distributing National Day promotional items and all participants will be entered in raffle to win an IPOD. They are encouraging all community agencies and schools to participate and join the fight against teen pregnancy.
  • Lawrence, MA: The Lawrence Coalition on Teen Pregnancy - another program of Health Quarters - will have an informational table with materials and resources for teens after school outside of the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, which is located near the high school.

MICHIGAN

  • Holland, MI: The Ottawa County Health Department is creating a short presentation that will be offered throughout the community using photography of teens from a variety of backgrounds and sexual health history.  They are providing all local high schools business size cards with local stats of teen pregnancy/STD information that also promotes their local sexual health coalition’s MySpace page, which will have a link to the National Day quiz. They are also working with local floral and tuxedo rental shops to hand out this cards to customers during prom season.
  • Lansing, MI: Ingham County Health Department’s Willow Health Center will be host classroom viewings of the movie ‘Juno’ during the week of the National Day. After the movie, the peer educators will disburse the National Day Quiz as well as show The National Campaign's "Too Young" educational video and discussion the issues surrounding teen pregnancy. They also plan to distribute National Day buttons wristbands to students.

  • Hannibal, MO: The CHART Teen Task Force is planning several activities for the National Day. About 600 Hannibal Middle School students will take the National Day Quiz in the school's computer classroms during the school day and Hannibal High School students will be able to take the quiz after school with incentives of pizza and drinks. A press release about the National Day appeared in the local newspaper, as well as an ad encouraging teens to take the quiz. Also in May, the CHART Teen Task Force has sponsored billboards in seven counties of northeast Missouri with the message: "Flies Spread Diseases, Keep Yours Zipped."
  • St. Louis, MO: The Teen Pregnancy and Prevention Partnership is promoting the National Day to their members and teen clients through their e-newsletter and recent membership meetings, reaching more than 100 professionals who work with youth in schools, health departments and social service agencies. In addition, they are increasing awareness through their community forum on Thursday, May 7, and their 2009 conference, on Friday, May 8, in St. Louis, Missouri. The community forum will feature Anne Troy, a nurse practitioner, sexual assault nurse examiner, and faculty member at LSU, presenting her talk, “Teens NOT Gone Wild”, to local teens, parents, and community members.  The conference, entitled “What’s the Buzz? Evidence-Based Approaches to Teen Sexual Health”, will address health development issues and risks unique to adolescents, discuss current applications and challenges of evidence-based approaches to teen sexual health, provide resources and tools available in the community and public media to connect with teens, and clarify adolescent development’s role on teen sexual behaviors and health. The conference will also feature the partnership’s 5th annual “Youth Speak Out” presentation, with a panel of local teen sexual health advocates presenting their educational skit, “Dangerous Love: When Teen Dating Turns Violent”.

MONTANA

  • Missoula, MT: The Missoula Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting, and Prevention Services (MAPPPS) is recognizing the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy along with Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month with several community events. The coalition will hold two workshops targeting parents of teens and teens in our community in order to assist in beginning a commonly uncomfortable set of discussions and encourage each person’s ability to make educated decisions in relationships. MAPPPS will also be organizing a “speak-out,” or an open forum discussion to create a sense of compassion as well as promote an open dialogue in Missoula about sex and sexuality. In addition to these three coalition-hosted events, MAPPPS members will be present at other local events during the month of May to demonstrate our community’s responsibility for creating a safe, loving, open and honest environment for the teens of Missoula to grow and thrive.

  • Newark, NJ: Project YES You Can! and Saint Michael’s Medical Center plan to support the National Day in a number of ways this May.  They will have lobby displays in three clinical areas of the hospital showing PSAs encouraging parents to speak with their children about postponing sexual activity.  They are also writing an article about teen pregnancy prevention for their corporate Intranet and their quarterly newsletter and issuing a press release about the National Day.  In addition, they are planning two Lunch ‘n Learns where attendees watch a video on teen pregnancy and participate in a group discussion.  Attendees will be entered in a raffle to win a Family Movie Night gift basket. They also plan to promote the online quiz in classroom settings.

NEW MEXICO

  • Curry County, NM: The Curry County Wellness Council has planned activities for May 4-9. They will be setting up laptops at local hot spots where teens hang out, such as the mall, coffee shops, and local restaurants. Teens will be able to take the National Day Quiz and enter their name into a drawing for gift cards from local merchants and a grand prize drawing for an Apple iPod nano. They are also working with local radio stations to air National Day PSA's.
  • Zuni, NM: The Pueblo of Zuni-ZECDC/TANF Program is planning a teen pregnancy prevention awareness walk on May 1st at 5:30pm. The program will also have a variety of workshops to raise awareness of the issue throughout May.

NEW YORK

  • Bronx, NY: Mision para Vivir, Inc (MIPAV) is planning several events and activities to celebrate the 2009 National Day.  They are working with several large Spanish-speaking churches to get the word out about the event, planning to distribute information from The National Campaign, and planning a National Day event at a local church.
  • Cortland, NY: Cortland County’s Zero Adolescent Pregnancy (ZAP) Program will work with their peer educators to distribute awareness wristbands at five school districts in Cortland County along with cards that encourage teens to take the National Day Quiz. They are also contacting health teachers at the five districts in Cortland County to encourage them to offer the quiz as a classroom assignment. They are planning to post promotional materials at the local teen center, the Jacobus Center for Reproductive Health Clinic, and the hallway of the Cortland County Office Building.
  • East Meadow, NY: The Nassau Health Care Corporation/Community Health Centers’ Family Planning Program plans to promote the National Day for the third year in a row by setting up tables in the cafeterias of four of the area’s largest high schools. They will distribute wristbands and buttons encouraging students to take the quiz. Students will also receive pregnancy prevention pamphlets as well information about where they can obtain low cost or free confidential reproductive services.
  • New York, NY: Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City are celebrating the National Day for the fifth year in a row!  This year, they are offering a workshop for teens that will be dedicated to discussing relationships and having fun acting out and practicing new skills to encourage open communication. The second half of the workshop will be a discussion led by teen moms in the Young Mothers Program about the realities of teen parenting.   They are also planning a workshop for parents on how to talk to their teens about sexuality. This event is open to all the teens involved in their program as well as at partner agencies. These event are scheduled for May 19th from 6-8 pm at their main office in Manhattan.
  • Peekskill, NY: For the third year in a row, Hudson River HealthCare Inc. plans to promote Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month and the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. They plan to offer the National Day Quiz at Peekskill High School and Hudson River HealthCare Inc. on the National Day.  After taking the online quiz, students will be be invited to participate in an interactive discussion with local health care professionals.

  • Durham, NC: The Durham County Health Department’s Plain Talk team is planning to celebrate the National Day with an event at a local church. Teens will be able to access the online National Day Quiz and they are planning to offer additional activities.
  • Kernersville, NC: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Theta Mu Sigma Chapter plans set up computers for local teens to take the National Day Quiz and they will pass out National Day wristbands and information about teen pregnancy at Winston-Salem Forsyth County High Shools to remind students about the National Day.

  • Cincinnati, OH: Radio One (WIZF, WMOJ, WDBZ) and Light of the World Ministries are sponsoring a media campaign with public service announcements on the radio, and a series of three town hall meetings during the Spring of 2009 to help adults have more healthy conversations with teens about sex. Their primary message to adults: "We may not have all the answers, but we still must ENGAGE in healthy CONVERSATION with TEENS about SEX.” One of the town hall meetings will be held May 5, 2009 at 6:00 pm, in conjunction with National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day, May 6, 2009.

  • Philadelphia, PA: Congreso de Latinos Unidos’ Alcanza Teen Parenting Program will be hosting a Wellness Fair -- “Healthy Living is Forvever!” -- to raise community awareness around the issue of teen pregnancy, as well as other health and wellness issues facing adolescents ages 12-21 in North Philadelphia. The main purpose of this community event is to focus the attention of teens and their families on the importance of avoiding teen pregnancy and other serious consequences of sex. In addition to the Wellness Fair, teens will be asked to participate by completing the National Day Quiz. They plan to offer food, raffles, activities, and more.  The Wellness Fair will take place on May 6th, 2009, from 2:00-6:00 P.M. at Congreso de Latinos Unidos’ courtyard on 216 west Somerset Street.

  • Columbia, SC: In honor of the National Day, the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy will host a special presentation -- From the Page to the Stage: A Dramatic Performance of Teens Are Talking. R U Listening? -- on Wednesday, May 6th at 5:00pm at the Trustus Theatre in Columbia. Trustus Theatre is located at 520 Lady Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
  • Columbia, SC: Palmetto Health's Office of Community Services' Maternal and Child Health Initiative will be hosting a teen rap session at Crayton Middle School in Columbia, SC and Pickens Middle School in Pickens, SC on Wednesday, May 6 at 11:00am. Students will discuss teen pregnancy and how it may affect high school dreams and future career goals. Teens will be encouraged to share this information with peers and parents in celebration of Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day.
  • Columbia, SC: The Youth Department at Central Baptist Church plans to host a teen awareness bible study program to promote the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month and the National Day.  They plan to address current issues by allowing their youth to submit questions anonymously.  The teens will also be encouraged to invite their friends to this event.  They plan to set up their family life center in a café-style setting, serve light refreshments, and offer door prizes to participants.
  • Manning, SC: For National Day, the youth drama troupe, CHOICES, performed at Manning High School. The group - made up of high school students from area high schools - performed improvisational skits that focused teen pregnancy, date rape, peer pressure, self esteem, suicide, drugs, relationships and other issues teens are faced with.  Their performances were designed get teens thinking about the consequences and effects of each issue.  After each scene, the audience was encouraged to express their feelings in an open discussion led by the troupe moderator.  All students were encouraged to take the National Day Quiz and great prizes were given out. Many students expressed that the scenes were engaging and made them think more about the consequences of sex and other risky behaviors.

TENNESSEE

  • Chattanooga, TN: During May, First Things First, On Point (Formerly Why kNOw), and the Moccasin Bend Girl Scout Council are collaborating to bring awareness to the issue of teen pregnancy and ways to prevent it. They are creating a website (isIttheRighttime.org), bus placards, and billboards in an effort to get young people thinking about the consequences of teen pregnancy.  They are planning a press conference on May 6th to kick off their Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month efforts and they hope to create an ongoing conversation in their community about the issues surrounding teen pregnancy.
  • Washington County, TN: In Washington County, local health educators will team up with area high schools to have students take the National Day Quiz. Approximately 500 students in Washington County will be given the opportunity to take this quiz in class and one area high school will have an information fair for everyone. Students and faculty will have the opportunity to receive information about teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, abstinence, birth control, health department services, rape, sexual coercion and dating violence. The local health department will also have flyers displayed through out the month of May encouraging local teens to take the quiz.

TEXAS

  • Brownwood, TX: The Boys and Girls Club of Brown County will be participating in the 2009 National Day by having their Smart Leaders promote the event with posters and by talking to their members. They will encourage teen to take the National Day Quiz.
  • El Paso, TX: Professional speaker and performer Patrick Perez and the El Paso County Department of Health and Environment will present to local middle school students at a school assembly called "Choices 2 Should Know." The assembly will touch on STDs, teen pregnancy, and sexual violence. They hope they event will be both fun and informative for the teens in attendence.
  • El Paso, TX: Community Health Educators from Thomason Hospital  Women's Health Center will present to to local middle and high school teens on the importance of sexual responsibility and positive decision making, and how it relates to the prevention of teen pregnancy. Students will also be given the opportunity to become "pregnant" with the use of an empathy belly. They will be able to experience what a nine month pregnancy feels like, while learning the responsibilities of being a teenage parent. At the end of each presentation, students will take the National Day Quiz.
  • Houston, TX: House of Hope is recognizing the National Day by sending out a press release within their community about teen pregnancy prevention within the Wards of Houston and Church Communities. They also plan to distribute information and copies of the National Day Quiz to over 800 youth and young adults between May 1-7.
  • San Antonio, TX: This year, Project WORTH plans to support the National Day by running an advertisment promoting the event in ChicaGirl Magazine, an online magazine for young women. The ad will have a link to the quiz and encourage teens to participate. In addition, Project WORTH along with the City of San Antonio Library Department will host a press conference with a mayoral proclamation to include teens, parents, elected officials and community members. Project WORTH will also promote the National Day Quiz through our partners radio station 98.5FM The BEAT, andUnivision KWEX Channel 41.
  • Slaton, TX: Slaton High School is participating in the National Day for the second year in a row.  The National Day Quiz will be administered to the entire high school by school officials, volunteers from Slaton ISD Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), and staff from City of Lubbock Health Education Department.  Also, the mayor will issue a city proclamation supporting the National Day.
  • Houston, TX: Planned Parenthood Houston and Southeast Texas' TeenREACH Initiative plans to host a teen summit in honor of the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The group's objectives are to encourage teens to Respect sexuality and its responsibilities, Educate themselves, Act responsibly, Choose wisely, and Help others by sharing the knowledge. The event is planned for Saturday, May 9th in Houston, Texas and they hope to reach 300 young people and parents with their interactive, informative, and impactful event.

  • Milwaukee, WI: The United Way of Greater Milwaukee's Pregnancy Prevention Initiative will recognize the National Day by announcing their new collaborative fund, which makes grant money available to the Milwaukee community for teen pregnancy prevention efforts.  They are launching the newest phase of a public awareness media campaign, including anti-statutory rape radio ads.  They are also planning to release an update to their 2006 research report, “If Truth Be Told: Teen Pregnancy, Public Health and the Cycle of Poverty.”  In addition, eleven of their Healthy Girls programs will be engaged in a variety of communitywide events promoting the National Day.
